Childrens Auction brings collecting back into the community As part of our effort to revitalize the coin collecting hobby
among area youth, the Bellaire Coin Club in Houston, Texas recently conducted (3)
Childrens Auctions in conjunction with our annual clubs show in Houston, Texas
August 1-2. Our club had almost 1000 people visited the annual event, and drew over 160
area youths to the three auctions during the show. Our club firmly believes that by exposing the community to collecting via the local A.N.A. member club network and local coin shows is the best way to grow the next generation of collectors. This grass roots effort by local coin clubs can be expanded by using the A.N.A. network as a backbone for presenting educational programs, sharing ideas, and bringing old and new collectors back into the hobby by reaching out into the community and making a difference. During each Childrens Auction at our annual show, area
youths can use "play money" to battle it out in a live auction with bids on
various items like proof sets, old silver dollars, books, and other numismatic items which
have been donated for the show. Of course, they get to keep all the items they
successfully bid on, and can only pay for them with the "play money". Our club
was very fortunate to receive a contribution of 100 copies of How to Grade U.S. Coins
by author James L.Halperin (of Heritage Rare Coin
Galleries), and a literal hoard of books by renowned numismatist and author, Q. David
Bowers which were donated exclusively for the show. The club hopes that these books will
prove very educational, for the grade (or condition) of a rare coin, and its scarcity, are
of prime importance in determining its value. We received several thank you notes from
children and parents alike, not only for the generous contributions of local and national
dealers, but for sending them home with a positive and fun experience at a local coin
show. Childrens Auctions also have a wonderful way of increasing bourse traffic for area shows, not only through increased attendance, but it also tends to make the local show a bit more newsworthy for the local press. At their request, weve shared this format with local clubs in Ft Worth, San Antonio, and in nearby Pasadena, and wish all of them the very best in expanding the interest of numismatics among area youths in their respective communities. If you are involved in promoting a show for a local A.N.A. Member Coin Club and want more information on how you can develop a Childrens Auction to broaden exposure to the community, please contact me at the address listed below. Happy collecting ! Jim Bevill The Bellaire Coin Show is hosted by the Bellaire Coin Club, a local non-profit organization which provides a forum to learn about rare coins and paper money, and to especially assist the amateur or beginning collector. The club meets the first and third Mondays of each month at 7:00 p.m., at the Bellaire Library, 5111 Jessami
